Keep It Simple When Starting Your Biz: Interview with Luisa Zhou - PPP: 064
Tuesday Aug 15, 2017
Tuesday Aug 15, 2017
Today we're going to dial things back to the very beginning for those people who are just graduating, who just wrote their license, or who are just starting out, so we can take back a lot of the concern. As an entrepreneur, we're already overwhelmed enough and with all of the options for software, equipment, technology, etc. it can become so overwhelming. This is why I wanted to have a show where we break everything down, step by step. Right now you may be looking at the whole city when you should really just be looking at the street. It's time to simplify everything so you can see the roadmap, but you're not looking at the entire picture. It doesn't have to be complicated, nor does it have to be expensive when you first start out.

The Truth About Being a Mompreneur: Interview with Michelle Peris, ND

The Truth About Being a Mompreneur: Interview with Michelle Peris, ND - PPP: 063
Tuesday Aug 15, 2017
Tuesday Aug 15, 2017
Today I'm talking to Michelle Peris. In this episode, we're talking woman to woman about being a female in an entrepreneurial role while still having children. Becoming a mompreneur and balancing my business with family life was definitely something I had to wrap my mind around. The first couple of months were really difficult. Going from completely independent to having a child that is completely dependent on you is a huge, overwhelming struggle. It can be difficult to navigate bonding with your baby, while you constantly have your business and work things to think about. To balance my work, my sanity, and my life, I found different ways to relinquish control, and manage both parts of my life. You just have to survive it. You have to survive being a new mother for the first time. You're going to have to give up certain things and it's important to be okay with that. You have to realize that you're not going to be able to do everything the way you planned it.
I've brought on Michelle Peris to have an open and honest conversation about what it's like to own and run a successful business while also being a mother. I really encourage these types of conversations to start happening in our community, without shaming. Mothers shouldn't judge or make one another feel bad about different parenting choices, even if they don't agree with each other. It's important to be a little less opinionated, and a little more open minded. Becoming a parent is entering a whole new world that feels scary and judgemental, but a lot of that comes from within. It's important to take it easy on yourself. Understand what your limitations are. It will be okay regardless of how you decide to raise your family and run your practice.
Questions I Asked Michelle:
- How has your business grown from the beginning?
- Did you have to fight with the internal guilt of leaving your family and your son to go back to work after your maternity leave?
- Can you talk about what it's like to go back to that entrepreneurial focus now that your children are going to school?
- What are some concerns you hear from other entrepreneurial moms?
What You'll Learn From This Episode:
- How she figured out how to grow her business as a new parent.
- How Michelle found a balance of work and family with the help of her husband.
- The importance of compartmentalizing your time as a mompreneur.
- How Michelle feels about "mom guilt."

How Niching Your Practice Is Not The End: Interview with Dr. Nicola McFadzean, ND
Tuesday Aug 15, 2017
Tuesday Aug 15, 2017
Today I'm talking to Nicola Fadzean. I asked her to be on the show because I know we're always hearing about how to identify the target audience that you want to be treated is and how to figure out what that ideal patient avatar looks like. The thing is we hear it time and time again, questions like, "what does your ideal patient look like?" "what do they do?" "what are their hobbies?" "How old are they?" etc. It's incredibly important to know those things, but the part I find we're struggling with as a community, especially as a recent grad, is not knowing who that ideal patient is. We don't know if we want to focus on a certain group of people or one type of patient. Nicola went through this exact experience. She didn't
Nicola went through this exact experience. She didn't know who exactly she wanted to treat so she ran this generalized practice until one of her mentors told her there's no one really working on Lyme disease so she should get into it. You'll hear throughout the interview that it wasn't necessarily her true passion to treat the Lyme community, but she found a way to niche her market and grow her practice. It's a very interesting journey that she went to and I wanted to share that here on this podcast because I know so many of us feel we need to figure out exactly who we're going to treat right away, but you just don't know the path your business is going to on to get there. It's about being open to the evolution of your business and letting things happen over time.

Double Your Sales with Email: Interview with Ben Settle - PPP: 060
Wednesday Aug 02, 2017
Wednesday Aug 02, 2017
Today I wanted to bring on another person to specifically talk about copywriting on the show. This was so important to me because it really is the life blood of anything that you want to do in your business. If your goal is to write emails and engage with your audience and grow a bigger list or if you want to create a landing page with online or offline programs and you want to actually sell them you need to be able to communicate with your audience in such a way that gets them interested. Once you can do that, and you can start linking them to your sales page, shopping cart, etc. that's when you start to get rid of a lot of those objections because you've written your products or services out in such a way that they would be crazy to not take you up on that offer if that offer is for them.
It's time to start chipping away at that fear of writing that so many of us have. There's no reason to feel confused, frustrated, or uninspired anymore. In this show, Ben Settle really breaks down the 5 steps you need to create good sales copy to get the results you want out of your business.

Your Online Shopping Cart MasterPlan - Interview with Chloe Thomas - PPP: 058
Tuesday Jul 25, 2017

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about how to set up an online store and I always tell people that it’s not necessarily as easy as you might think it is. When I first started my online store I had two products to offer: a physical copy of my book and a digital version. It took a lot of time and work to learn how to get a merchant account, manage the store, upload photos, change prices, etc. but now there are a lot of new software that makes doing all of those things a lot easier.
You really need to start thinking about not just the dollar value of something, how much it will cost to opt in, pay for a software monthly, hire someone to get something set up for you, etc., but the long term value. Investing in these things will save you time and money so instead of spending 5 months learning how to set up a website, you could hire someone and have it done within a few days for a small price and then being 5 months ahead.
It’s time to finding things that will make your life easier, take away the stress of having to learn a new software from scratch, etc. You need to weigh your dollar value vs. your time. Is it really worth it to waste more time doing things when you could, for a small cost, get something up and going with the help of a software or another person you can hire? You need to start getting serious about how long you want to leave money on the table.
Today Chloe and I are talking about having an online store, leveraging an online store, the value of having it, and using the store with as much emphasis as you would with your own business. If you don’t even have a store set up, you’re not going to be going very far on your way to make some extra money.
Questions I Asked Chloe:
- Why did you decide to leave your comfortable day job to start your online business?
- Why is having an online store such a valuable tool?
- Can you define ecommerce?
- Is it better to link your shop off of your website? Or should you keep people on your site?
- How does someone grow their online store?
What You'll Learn From This Episode:
- A basic run down of how to set up an online store.
- What platform Chloe recommends for eccommerce.
- Whether it's better to learn the software to set up an online store, or if you should hire someone to quickly get it done for you.
- The cost of creating an online store.

I don't know about you but I have been inundated with people talking about Facebook bots and I have no clue what they're talking about. I keep hearing it as like the next best thing to email marketing and we don't have to do anything else but have Facebook messenger bots. People are making tons of money using them but I have no idea what they are.
Zach Spuckler is one of the people I follow, and he's launching a 3-hour training session that I signed up for, just on the Facebook messenger bot. That's why I decided that it's really important to have someone on the show to talk to us about it. Not only is he going to talk about messaging bots and what that's all about, but he's also going to be talking about retargeting ads because retargeting ads are another type of trend in this space right now.

Today's episode is one of the coolest podcast interviews I've had in a while and the reason why is because it's something that I never really thought mattered. This episode isn't about who you are as a practitioner, what your offering, or the online tech stuff... it's all about your treatment space which is something a lot of us don't put much emphasis in. It's important to remember that when somebody comes into your office, that's where the initial attraction, treatment, and a theraputic relationship begins. During this episode, you'll hear Cheryl unfold just how important having a therapeutic space is.
Cheryl Janis is the principal of Cheryl Janis Designs–a wellness design studio in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to helping purpose-driven doctors and wellness professionals achieve the very best healing environments possible. Unlike conventional interior designers, Cheryl uses an integrated holistic and evidence-based approach to design—evaluating the patient experience from the moment they walk through the door until the time they leave, and every step in between.
She is the author of The Color Cure: How to transform your healthcare office, clinic or treatment room into an oasis by choosing the perfect paint and The Waiting Room Cure: The purpose-driven healthcare practitioner’s guide to transforming waiting rooms into nurturing, highly-profitable, referral-generating dynamos.

How to Start Your Own Podcast: Interview with Melvin Varghese - PPP: 055
Sunday Jun 11, 2017
Sunday Jun 11, 2017
If you really love listening to podcasts, you really learn from them, and you are interested in this type of media, this is the episode for you. Today I'm talking to Melvin Varghese who will be walking you through the steps of starting your podcast, how to build your audience, and how to use it to grow your business. The whole reason I started this podcast was to find ways to help you stop trading your dollars for patients in front of you because if they're not there, you're not making any money.
One thing that Melvin talks about is how important it is to have your hand in multiple cookie jars and trying to find more ways to leverage income in your business, opposed to just trading time for service and podcasting is one of the phenomenal ways to do that.

When I first started my practice I went with my mom to this Women in Networking Group meet up. We were networking with these ladies and I kind of caught the networking "bug." I started looking for meetup groups and other networking groups in my area and I started showing up to them. I found doing this incredibly valuable, especially just starting out because I was trying to build a reputation around my business; however, at times it was extremely difficult to go to those networking events, especially as an introvert. It can be very exhausting, it's not always the most exciting thing to do, and there were times when I felt inauthentic and forced to meet people, giving the same elevator speech over and over again.
For me, networking really did not jive with me, but I knew how valuable it is particularly when I see the referral network I've created with other practitioners in my area, and how much it has helped me grow. Introvert, extrovert, or otherwise, you do need to reach out of your clinic and start to get to know and build relationships with people outside of your office. This is probably the best tactic to get people to send you patients. There are so many instances where naturopaths have cultivated wonderful relationships with medical doctors, osteopaths, or other types of medical practitioners. These relationships often lead to those medical practitioners welcoming naturopathic doctors into their practices as associates to work right along side them. You can't do that without networking and building relationships.
Like I mentioned earlier, from an introvert's perspective, doing this can be a very scary thing. After many strategy calls and coaching calls, clients say networking just doesn't feel like something they can do, but once they figure out the technique to doing it, and giving the networking purpose (as opposed to just showing up and hoping someone talks to you), can have a tremendous impact on how you grow your practice.
Today I'm talking to Serena Goldstein who was my very first coaching client. She has done such a tremendous job with her business. Everything that I've told her to do, she has done with a masterful focus and did it. She has really focused on the marketing side of her business and growing it through networking. She shares how to and how not to network, how to grow those relationships that you want, and how you can implement it into your practice.
