In this episode of The Profitable Practice Podcast, I talk about my recent experience with name-droppers, how I will handle it in the future, and not allowing yourself to get distracted from your own work.
DO YOU KNOW SO-AND-SO?
There is no shortage of people building great things in our industry. I’m amazed every day at what others create and discover in order to help folks improve their health.
The thing is, if you are going to be one of them, you CANNOT be peeking over the fence every time someone somewhere shares their work.
Name dropping is totally human. I get it, and I do it too. It’s often not so much that we are trying to seem “connected” but more about how we try to engage folks in discussion about whatever topic is on the table. That said, when you don’t know the name referred to – well it can leave you feeling irritated and judged as being out-of-the-loop.
The way I see it, if you don’t know so-and-so… that can be a signal that you ARE on the right track to BEING the name someone is dropping next… tune in to find out how.
“Of course I don’t know who all those influencers are; I spend next to no time scrolling on social media because I’m too busy building a multi six-figure BUSINESS bitches!”
— Andrea Maxim, ND & Business Coach
After You’ve Listened To The Episode, I Would **LOVE** To Hear Your Thoughts:
- How have you handled name-droppers in the past? Got a good line you’d like to share?
- If you logged out and stopped consuming everyone else’s content, what would you create?
One of the best parts of any episode is getting to discuss the topic with you. Everyone gets to learn so much from sharing. So let me know your thoughts wherever you get social on the net, IG, FB, in the comments below – wherever!

Stop Throwing Money Away By Wasting Your Time On $15/Hour Admin Work [Ep. #119]
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
In this episode of The Profitable Practice Podcast, I share my my thoughts on how administrative work wastes your time and cripples your practice growth.
AS A BUSINESS OWNER, YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOUR TIME COUNT – DON’T WASTE IT ON TASKS THAT OTHERS CAN BE TRAINED TO DO.
We were short on reception staff one morning, and handled it as best we could… it was a busy and fast morning to be sure. It certainly made me grateful for all that my office manager does for me.
That said, there were some powerful lessons learned.
In my first teachable moment with my new associate, I was so happy to drive home the idea that her (highly trained) time is the most valuable asset she has to offer.
“If you ever think you can’t afford to hire help? Do the math!”, I said.
In this episode, I do just that and share this important lesson for any practitioner looking to grow their practice and ultimately, build their whole clinic.
In This Episode:
-
[0:50] My first teachable moment with my new associate – the value of not wasting your time on $15/hr admin work.
-
[4:45] Do the math: examples of smarter, revenue generating things that you SHOULD be doing with your time.
-
[5:56] Leveraging staff for better productivity in your business.
“You are a PRACTITIONER. You went to school for 4+ years… you spent SIX FIGURES on your education! You should NOT be doing grunt work.”
— Andrea Maxim, ND & Business Coach
After You’ve Listened To The Episode, I Would **LOVE** To Hear Your Thoughts:
- Have you hired reception? If not, will you after listening to this argument?
- What tasks have you trained your reception to handle? Is there more you could pass along?
One of the best parts of any episode is getting to discuss the topic with you. . Let me know your thoughts wherever you get social on the net, IG, FB, or in the comments below – wherever!

Hiring Your First Associate To Help You With Patients [Ep. #118]
Thursday Oct 17, 2019
Thursday Oct 17, 2019
In this episode, Dr. Andrea Maxim discusses how she was able to remove herself from the 1:1 model, hire help, and become a team leader and manager.
How To Extract Yourself From Your Practice By Hiring Help
I waited too long to hire help.
I was terrified of letting go of control of my patient care. Would my patients accept another practitioner after working with me? Would they LIKE the new practitioner? Would the new practitioner uphold my hard earned reputation and the brand I’ve built?
This summer, after a time study, I got over myself and embraced the growth that I had been resisting.
And you know what? I’m so glad I did!
If you are hesitating about hiring help in the form of another practitioner, then this episode is for you.
In This Episode:
[1:02] How a time study helped me realize I’m not a unicorn and can be replaced. How I hired my first clinical associate (Meaghan!) to free myself up from some 1:1 patient consulting hours.
[3:13] Additional things besides patient visits I have Meaghan do.
[5:51] Inspiration for hiring help
[6:20] HEADS UP – blurred lines between independent contractors and employees can be incredibly costly.
[7:20] Possible scenarios for hiring your first clinical employees.
“It is 100% possible for you to remove yourself from the business, allow other people to come in and take over some of the hours or patients, or days in your clinic, and you can still make a decent amount of revenue doing that.”
— Dr. Andrea Maxim, ND & Business Coach
After You’ve Listened To The Episode, I Would **LOVE** To Hear Your Thoughts:
Are you ready to hire another practitioner to help you serve more patients? If so, what’s holding you back? If not, where would you like to be in terms of revenues and patient numbers before investing in help?
One of the best parts of any episode is getting to discuss the topic with you. Everyone gets to learn so much from sharing. So let me know your thoughts wherever you get social on the net, IG, FB, in the comments below – wherever!

4 Strategies To Get Shit Done When You Just Don’t Feel Like It [Ep. #117]
Thursday Oct 10, 2019
Thursday Oct 10, 2019
In this episode of The Profitable Practice Podcast, I share my 4 go-to strategies to motivate myself to work when I just don’t feel like it.
MOTIVATING YOURSELF WHEN ALL YOU FEEL LIKE DOING IS BINGE WATCHING NETFLIX
We’ve all been there. More than once I’d wager. In fact, at least once a month I catch justdon’twannadoanything-itis.
It would be so easy to give in to the couch.
But that’s not how leaders behave.
That’s not how successful business owners behave.
AND…
It’s certainly not how folks who enjoy their downtime to the fullest behave.
Because that’s what we are about isn’t it? Enjoying our lives to the fullest at both work and play.
Tune into this episode and learn my four go-to strategies for getting my head back in the game FAST when I feel like sitting on the sidelines like a lump.
In This Episode:
- [2:22] The most common reason you don’t feel like working and what our team does to avoid it. (Strategy #1)
- [5:40] Strategy #2 – Actually decide to just take a break – like you mean it.
- [8:03] Strategy #3 – Just open your computer – and start.
- [9:30] Strategy #4 – Attach an enjoyable routine to an unenjoyable task. (Cause if it ain’t fun it don’t get done!)
“One thing I always say to myself: I’m building my own business. I’m creating my own lifestyle. Why should I always feel that I need to be a slave to the business and lifestyle that I’m creating? This is my game, and I get to create the rules.” — Andrea Maxim, ND & Business Coach

Key Business Metrics For Health & Wellness Clinic Owners [Ep. #116]
Thursday Oct 03, 2019
Thursday Oct 03, 2019
In this episode of The Profitable Practice Podcast, I share the clinic business metrics I and all my coaching clients track to measure their overall business growth and success.
LET’S BREAK DOWN THE MOST IMPORTANT METRICS FOR TRACKING YOUR CLINIC GROWTH!
As a clinic owner, you have a lot more things to track than a simple associate. You are responsible for the overall running of the clinic – and that means ensuring it is running well and profitably for everyone involved. The benefit of having a working metrics dashboard is that you will always have your finger on the pulse of how your business is operating. It informs your decision making, so you can decide what to do more of, and what to cut.
“What gets measured, gets managed.”
Peter Drucker, Best Selling Author
To add to what Peter Drucker said, it follows that if you are in the dark about your key performance indicators (or metrics), you likely are not going to make good decisions and see results.
When you tune into this episode, you’ll learn the key metrics you should be tracking to stay clear on the performance of your:
- team
- inventory
- overhead
- marketing
“To be profitable as a clinic owner you gotta know exactly what your bare minim is that you need to be bringing in. Make sure that the people you bring into your practice are aware of that as well, because sometimes, if they KNEW how much it actually cost to run your business they are less likely to feel you are taking too much from them and MORE likely to work harder to reach their patient visit goals.”
Andrea Maxim
In This Episode:
-
[3:37] 6 KPIs you should be tracking for each associate and how to use them to grow your clinic the smart way
-
[7:45] KPIs for your supplement dispensary
-
[9:43] On Using Basic Fixed Overhead Expenses per month to inform decisions
-
[11:05] Marketing metrics to track to ensure your campaigns are profitable
-
[16:42] On hiring help to track the data, smart decisions not emotional decisions.
-
[17:51] Recap of Clinic Owner Metrics
-
[20:10] What to expect in terms of turnaround on social media

In this episode of The Profitable Practice Podcast, I share the 6 business metrics I have all my associates and clients track to measure their business growth and success.
LET’S BREAK DOWN THE MOST IMPORTANT NUMBERS FOR TRACKING YOUR BUSINESS GROWTH!
As a business owner, it is imperative you get feedback on how your business is growing… this let’s you know what’s working so you can decide what to do more of, and what to cut.
Businesses don’t grow like plants do… It’s not like you are a gardener who can eyeball a plant and see if it’s growing or not.
It’s something you have to track with the nitty gritty data.
“What gets measured, gets managed.”
Peter Drucker, Best Selling Author
To add to what Peter Drucker said, it follows that if you’re in the dark about key metrics, you aren’t going to see results.
When you tune into this episode, you’ll learn the 6 KPI’s I recommend that health and wellness pros working as an associate at their clinic’s track.

Are You An Action Taker Who Want A Practice That Is Profitable?
Thursday Sep 19, 2019
Thursday Sep 19, 2019
In this episode of The Profitable Practice Podcast, I talk about how to make the transition from student to working practitioner as easy as possible for yourself.
LET’S SHUT DOWN THE UNNECESSARY STRESS AND OVERWHELM OF STARTING YOUR PRACTICE!
It’s been my personal project these last few months to talk with as many folks in our industry as I can about their experience in business ownership. What I’m hearing is there is an AMAZING amount of pressure on a new grad transitioning into working practice from studying student.
There is also a lot of just plain bad business advice being given to them, when they are just starting out. In this episode, I set out to correct that, and put that advice into context for you.
Here’s the biggest shocker for most of us:
Your school/program was never supposed to train you to become a successful business owner. It’s purpose was to train you to become a great health practitioner. That's it.
When you tune into this episode, you’ll learn my top tips for avoiding common (and costly!) early practice pitfalls and I share the things that you should be focussing on building to get to profitability ASAP.
In This Episode:
- [1:00] The common experience of first couple years out of school and starting your professional practice.
- [2:30] My best resource to help you shortcut your way to profitability
- [6:39] The 4 most vital things that you should be building as soon as you graduate, IMO.
- [7:48] The ONLY goal you need to focus on to build them when you are just starting out.
- [10:27] Why most business advice we get upon graduation is just plain bad
- [13:04] When your gut says you’re not ready to pull the trigger on something…
After You’ve Listened To The Episode, I Would Love To Hear From You…
What has been YOUR experience so far in practice? Are you nodding in agreement at the pitfalls I discussed, or do you disagree? Leave a comment below and let me know!
If you are a new grad and have a question on starting your practice, share as much detail as you can, I read every post and am happy to provide thoughts and feedback on how to launch a new practice and help you break through the pressure and noise.
Thank you so much for listening in this week. Your commitment to learning and improving your business game matters – not just to your bottom line, but to the patients who are hoping to find someone who can help them too.
